Jr. Mechanic Certification Course

Bicycle Collective's Jr. Mechanic Certification course teaches problem solving, creativity, and attention to detail in a career and technical education course. During this class, youth learn bicycle mechanics through lecture and hands-on experience. Over the course of 24 lessons, students learn how to diagnose and repair problems on nearly any type of bicycle. This new skill may land them a job, hobby, or even just a way to spend time productively.

At the end of the course, each student has not only gained a new skill but also repaired several bikes that will be given away to local individuals in need. Students feel good knowing they are directly serving the community.

When asked about his favorite part of this program, one student said, "My favorite thing I have done so far in the class is take a crappy bike and turn it into something nice and usable." The same student was thrilled to see a newspaper report of a bike he fixed being given away to someone in need. That same bike recipient called the gift "life changing." The student felt that this was not just another class, it was making a real difference in the community.
