Bicycle Collective? What's a bicycle collective?
In Episode 1 of the series, we introduce you to The Bicycle Collective and what we do. Meet J.P. and some of our favorite shop mechanics and volunteers!
Hold your horses! you can't wear those sandals!
In Episode 2, "Shop Rules," we cover basic shop rules. This is an introduction to some guidelines to follow when working in and around the bicycle shop. These rules are adapted from our in-person “Youth Open Shop” program.
Meet all the tools like Wrenchy, Cable Cutter, Needlenose, Crank Puller, and many more!
In Episode 3, “Meet the Tools” we will introduce you to some of the tools used in the shop. Each tool will tell you their name and what their special talents are.
Yay! vocabulary words! Whether you learn the words or not, it will have no bearing on your ability to overhaul a headset.
Episode 4: “Learn the Parts of the Bike” will introduce you to the anatomy of a bicycle. Learn what those rubber things on your wheels are called. What about all those bits by the pedals? Yup, those too!
Knights OF the round workbench, Sir Fixaflat has a message for you.
Episode 5: “Fix a Flat” will teach you how to repair a flat tire and patch a tube. Oxnard talks about some of the common causes of flat tires and J.P. discusses some things that can be done to avoid them.
Bearing reduce friction between two moving parts. You knew that, right?!
Episode 6: “What’s the deal with bearings” introduces the audience to a bearing system: what a bearing is, what it does, and where bearings are found on the bicycle and in the wild!
Headsets are the bearings that keep your steering smooth and precise.
Episode 7: “Learn about Headsets” introduces the viewer to the first main bearing system, Headsets. Learn how to overhaul a threaded headset typically found on kids bikes. Lulu's headset is loose again. So she and J.P. do a full overhaul on it and make it good as new.
Bottom Brackets are just fancy words for crank bearings
Episode 8: “Getting to the Bottom of Bottom Brackets” introduces the viewer to the second main bearing system, Bottom Brackets. Learn how to adjust an American Bottom Bracket typically found on kids bikes.
Hubs are the center of the bicycle wheel universe.
